Hummingbirds in Ecuador’s cloud forest
Ecuador has an amazing variety of bird-life with over 1600 species of birds and more than 20% the world’s population (world record per square meter). Ecuador is also home for 132 species of Hummingbirds, which is another world’s record!
Hummingbirds are among the smallest of birds, and include the smallest extant bird species, the Bee Hummingbirds. They can hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 12–90 times per second (depending on the species). They fly at speeds exceeding 15 m/s (54 km/h) and are the only group of birds able fly backwards. No need to say that photographing them while flying is rather challenging, specially in low light conditions.
